I voted okay...and it looks like okay wins it! It was okay, not really bad, not good either. It was no Alien but it was no Cherry 2000 either.

It was a good detective/police story, set in a mining colony on some planet-somewhere. Sean Connery was the security officer trying to find the truth about death and corruption. No daylight-of course-so some of the scenes were claustrophobic.

All true, and the story and acting is not that bad.
But it is one of those films in whichg the setting in time seems somehow accidental. This film could have played in the 10th or 20th centuries as well - wouldn't have made much difference (ok, the drugs would be others )

Its fairly good and certainly diffrent from most space movies. A detective movie on a mining colony?

SPOILERS BELOW!

People freaking out and decompressing messily in their suits?
Who do you trust and who is going to stab you in the back?
Or worse yet. Who will do nothing at all...
Good sets and some great sequences.

I voted Ok mostly because Im not all that big a detective movie fan, yet still found it interesting.

Do note though that this is not some super shoot-em-up. Its a detective movie much like Blade Runner is. Though Outland seems a little more laid back than Blade Runner.

The influence of Alien is clear. The inside of the base looks much the same as the inside of the Nostormo.

Before CyberPunk there was this Alien-Punk. This movie has that same industrial feel. A great movie to look at if you like Alien, Silent Running, or Space 1999. The industrial-outpost-drug-theme is ok, but it is the look and attitude that matters. Sorta Gibson with no wires.

It rates a watch if you've never seen it. Probably a key early '80's entry.

Go Con-Am!

Re: Good, Bad, Ugly?

I read somewhere that it was inspired by "High Noon", a western starring Gary Cooper. They just moved the setting into the future.

I thought it was okay.

Oh my God. I think Dean Cain tried to redo this movie with another name.

It flopped badly. Surprise, Surprise.
