So what would you do?
I had a thought about this today, as we all know, a number of years ago Mr. Lucas decided to re-release his original trilogy upgraded in quality and with some extra scenes stuck in. Intended to bring the original films a bit more up to date and show more of what he wanted to show now that the technology was available for him to do so.
I personally quite enjoy most of this stuff, I like the extra little fleshing out of certain vistas and what have you. Obviously it can go either way when we're talking about it impacting upon the story, for example, Greedo shooting first = bad. Hayden Christenson popping up at the end of Jedi = bad again. However, the ever so slightly re-written scene between the emperor and Vader via hololink in Empire I have to say I quite liked. If only for the fact that it was the right Emperor and it seemed to connect the stories a little better. Anyway, to the crux of this post. If you were in Lucas' shoes and had his power, imagine it's 20 years down the line and again he's going to re-release his films, including updated versions of the prequel films, what would you do. Now surely you can only make them better right? Don't just say, I would re-write and re-shoot the entire films cos that's too easy. You'll never be able to get them how you want them, you'll just have to accept that they exist in that form. But if you could tweak them, certain lines omitted? Certain dialogue added in, or a new scene added, 30 seconds here or there removed, different angles perhaps or maybe a change in effect shots? I've been thinking about this for a while and I'm not quite ready to put up what I think yet, but I'd be interested to see what you guys think. |

Re: So what would you do?
If I were in Lucas' shoes, the first thing I would do would be to sell the shoes. Then I would make (or rather co-write and produce- I'd have to find a competent director) decent and well-written films that have little if anything to do with the dead horse that is the Star Wars franchise. And if I were somehow contractually obliged to re-release the prequels, I would just let some disgruntled interns carve up those turkeys as they pleased.
