Nearly 20 yrs old!
I watched the abyss for the first time in a long time last night, with my girlfriend who'd never seen it, and I have to say it still really stands up as a great piece of cinema!
Obviously I was watching the special edition, considering the difference in theatrical version to special edition with Aliens it's somewhat surprising the studio did the same with this, though to be fair it is a long old slog of a movie. I thought the effects still look superb, the mixing of all the in camera effects with the cgi stuff (still very new at the time). Can't believe this film is nearly 20yrs old! And I also have to say I think it's one of Michael Biehn's best performances, ok he is one of my favourite actors and has done probably my favourite movie roles of all time but in this, he's absolutely magnificent, subtle, powerful and engrossing. And wonderfully deranged at points, though I have to give credit to Cameron for playing that small scene backwards which reall really does make Coffey look proper scary! Anyway, maybe I'm showing my age but when will movies get back to being like this? |
