Arrow Uploadable custom avatars for everyone?

I haven't had an avatar for God knows how long because I can't find one that I like from the ones that are available to me.

SciFlicks is the only forum that I regularly visit that doesn't have this feature.

Sci Flicks is the forum where you have to earn that right.

I suppose there are plus points to having such a high requirement for custom avatars.

idiots who abuse the system don't get to have fun with the system, wheras the loyal (or nearly) loyal and diligent collection of Geeks, Nerds and other people without an active social life get to promote their status amongst their social group.

With all due respect:

And by everyone I mean registereds, of course.

In my opinion it should be given a go and tried, if Ramses can.

Especially after approx. 6 years (4 for me) of not having the feature.

It's not an essential thing, but it would be very nice.

It's accurate to say that I'll probably never reach the current policy of reaching 1000 posts and then you can supposedly get your own avatar.

And then that brings up the question if Mess posts should actually count.

Does anyone really see a practical problem with this proposal?

Re: Uploadable custom avatars for everyone?

Well I do think that avatar choice should be larger, you are right about that but I don't think that custom avatar should be just given away.

I know it is like that on many forums but i like the idea that you have to contribute to the forum before you get quality perks.

Like Custom avatar, member status etc.

As for Pilots mess, in most of cases mess threads are just that. Mess. I personally could find a lot of threads that are not worth the bytes they are stored with. But hey , it is pilots mess. And these posts don't count . And it should stay that way in my opinion.

The bottom line is , this is a SF forum that should help people learn more about SF movies and give them the oportunity to talk about them as well as learn something about the ones they haven't seen. Not a chit-chat forum that counts unmoderated rable as quality contibution.

Once again that is how I see it.

Re: Uploadable custom avatars for everyone?

I kinda agree, especially considering how big and airy the SF forums are. It's good to have 'perks' for people that use the site for what is was intended.

There should be more avs to choose from as people contribute more, maybe the 1000 level should be lowered (but there should still be something decent to mark 1000).

Course the flip side is, you can have people racing to post borderline pap to get to the 1000. Then again on the otherside, why should Ramses give out server space to people who don't want to/can't be bothered to use the site for what it's here for.

Maybe more perks at different levels? Make the 1000 allowed bigger avs or something? Then again should have something at 2000 to.

it's funny, those with 1000 posts always agree with the 1000 post limit, those without disagree with it.

maybe Custom avatars at 500, custom titles at 1000, would be more apropriate

Re: Uploadable custom avatars for everyone?

As someone now (well) past 1000 posts, the whole issue doesn't really affect me at all

But I think it would be fine to give custom avatars to anyone - of course, offensive avatars would need to be moderated, just as they should be for us over-1000s.

Also - is Dajistano you, UY? Can I call you Daj for short? :P

Re: Uploadable custom avatars for everyone?

I dont think custom avatars would be a problem if the moderaters were allowed to actually moderate and clean up crap off the forums.

You dont want people hanging around to get an avatar - its a waste of their time. Other well moderated forums that I participate in allow custom avatars for everyone, but users cant post a "new" thread until they reply to other's posts so many times, sigs can only be so big, etc. - and of course, the moderators are ever-present and politely doing their jobs (like sweeping spam up and tossing it into the garbage and educating newer posters on what is acceptable).

We're behind the times, and Im not an avatar elitist. They express personality, and everyone should be allowed to have their own chosen picture.

Nope, though I would consider the debate.

I'm pretty sure that I'm set in my belief that 1000 posts serves as fairly good incentive (as long as it is done cleanly and without spamming *cough*Myself*cough*uNrEgIsTeReD_mAn*cough*) and gumming up the works.

I think that lowering the post count further devalues such an achievement as well.
