Re: What Are You Reading Now?

Well I've given up on that Doom book. It really is that bad, but more importantly, something else has eclipsed it:

I'm only 30 or so pages into it, but already it has presented more storytelling ability than the 170-odd pages I got through of that Doom book. I am also surprised at how much of the book, even dialogue, made it into Verhoevan's film.

I'm ashamed to say I've never read it before now.

And so it does. Having seen that symbol on every single thing related to the Amercan Sci-Fi Channel and "Sci-Fi Originals," it's pretty much been engrained in my head that anything bearing that image must be a Sci-Fi Original. My mind's playing tricks on me. Either that, or my eyesight is failing me.

Starship Troopers - cracking read. A lot more politics than I was expecting - not a subject a usually like but Heinlein wrote it in such a way that I actually find myself thinking that the justice and legal systems Earth has in the book are ones that I would like to see. Am I alone in this?

Well, except for making it a bit less mediatic, no, you're not.

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

My mother suggested I read Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. I read the first 30 pages and have never been so bored in my life. I really don't have a lot of patience with fantasy. I find it hard to immerse myself in a world which no-one except the author fully understands. The only reason I like The Lord of the Rings is because The Hobbit is a very cleverly written introduction to Middle Earth which eases children into this world which has its own history, geography, races, languages, mythology etc. But when I picked up The Silmarillion, the same thing happened - I just could not get into it. Such a huge and in depth chunk of history I simply cannot relate to

Anyway. Books I want to read; Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein (I've caught the Heinlein bug after reading Starship Troopers). Brave New World - because Wolf keeps going on about it. The Satanic Verses by Salmon Rushdie - just to see what all the fuss is about. 1984 by George Orwell - Because I'm ashamed to tell people I've never actually read it.

After you read that, watch the movie. They're both pretty nifty. And will make you want to lay down in front of a steamroller.

You should stick with Titus Groan - it really is masterful and ends up being a kind of goth Lord of the Rings if you can imagine that.

The whole "proletariat" thing kinda puts me off.

Re: What Are You Reading Now?

I'm already addicted, if that is the right word, to the book. Comparisons with the film Equilibrium (which I enjoyed) spring to my mind though.
