What character did he play in the film? I only remember James Arness from this one.

One of your fans and what a great classic movie that was. More people have tried to emulate that movie than any other. Pleased to meet you.
Kenneth Toby played the Captain, he was in charge of the situation. He also played in Beast from 20,000 Phantoms,
The Great Locomotive Chase, and the last that I had seen him in a film was Walking Tall part 1. Always liked him as an actor and wondered if he is still alive.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. You take care:

My, that was friendly! We don't get much of that around here.

From what I read, Kenneth Tobey is still alive and does still act from time to time. Click on this link for a page full of information on him: http://us.imdb.com/Name?Tobey,+Kenneth

And welcome to the forums Fred, from a fellow Buckeye.

Fred, you're very welcome. xXx, I'm glad you found that info, I haven't seen him in anything other than the Thing, even though I've seen 20,000 fathoms and Walking Tall. Guess I didn't recognize him.

Re: the thing-1950s

He was the Lt. Colonell in the Beast from 20,000 Phathoms, with Jeff Chandler chasing the General in the Great Locomotive Chase, ran a gambling joint in Walking tall, was Jim Bowie in the Walt Disneys Davy Crockett, among many others. He was always a B actor but every film he ever played in was a classic hit it seems. Once again, I appreciate. Wondering about what happened to someone like that is like going around with a song in your head and you dont know the name of it. Retired Copper

This has to be, without a doubt, the most civilized conversation in the history of Sciflicks. Please don't ruin it with talk of me being off-topic.

Thing and Beast were not B movies. They had pretty good budgets for their time. People seem to forget this with older films.

The 50s movie is very good. Watch out though for edited versions where the greenhouse sequence has been removed because it was "too scary". Not sure if anything else got the axe.
A suspensefull movie with some interesting characters.

There is also a crummy "colorized" version out there. UGH!
