Arcade Fire Presents "The Suburbs". 2nd and 3rd of August respectively.

You can hear the first single here.

Suburbs is sweet, Neil Youngy. Good, and it's definitely a grower, but not as startling as the first single from Neon Bible was. Month Of May is a fairly radically different nod to the Ramones.

I like it --- but it probably sounds a little bit more like Badly Drawn Boy than Neil Young.

Actually, Badly Drawn Boy is a far better comparison.

I wasn't blown away by the initial radio rip of The Suburbs, but after a couple of spins I couldn't stop humming it. The decent quality version on the site was a big step up. I can't wait to hear Month of May live. Won't be long until the Sweden show now. Eeeep.

Re: Jill & Iwata's Amazing Arcade Fire/Stalingrad Trivia Thread!!!

Arcade Fire's short film with Spike Jonze has been described as a "science fiction B-movie" in a recent interview, and people have gone mental with the description talking about aliens and stuff.

Quote:
It's not a video. It's a short film; we're still working on it. It's like a science-fiction B-movie companion piece for the record.

Basically, we played Spike some music from the album and the first images that came to his mind had the same feeling as this idea for a science fiction film I had when I was younger. My brother and I and Spike wrote it together, which was really fun— it was like total amateur hour.

We shot it in Austin and a lot of kids are in the film, and it was great just hanging out with these 15-year-olds for a week and writing down all the funny things they said. It was cool to revert to being a 15-year-old for a little while.

I am, as evidenced here, a huge nerd about Arcade Fire, and have been following the progress of the Spike Jonze thing for a couple of months. They've been showing carefully chosen clips from it at their live shows, just kids larking about around suburban Texas on bikes, but nothing that gives away too much.

Anyway, I have a hunch that it's not yer spaceshippy/alien kinda sci fi. Butler's mentioned a story he wrote as a kid a couple of times, and I think it's based on that. If I'm right, the short is about a bunch of kids on the early edge of teenagerdom who find themselves caught on different sides when a civil war breaks out between their respective suburbs. Arcade Fire themselves showed up in the clips shown at shows, playing cops. So there you go, you heard it here first.
