Dollhouse

hey - have you heard about the new series Dollhouse by Joss Whedon - starring you favorite girl, none other than Eliza Dushku?

thoughts? reactions? share.

Re: Dollhouse

I've heard mixed things, but I'm reserving judgement until I see it. Which, given my internet connection, should be sometime in the early 2010's.

Incidentally, I'd like to be the first to say that they should be called the Twenteens if we don't come up with a better name by then.

I love Dushku and all, but I'm the first to admit that her range could be limited, and the premise of this demands a lot. And the idea of it didn't arrest me initially, either, I find it difficult to imagine being drawn into a character who's essentially somebody different every week.

So, I'm looking forward to it a lot, but... cautious.

Re: Dollhouse

I saw it last Friday - not a bad show, maybe a little too "edgy." It's okay to be edgy, but I think Dollhouse is trying too hard. I liked it much better than the premeir of Fringe. Interesting characters, interesting setup - would expect no less from Joss Whedon but you gotta wonder, what is this dude thinking. Fox actively and intentionally KILLED Firefly with its constant meddling and time slot shifting. Already Dollhouse has been surrounded in controversy over supposedly network-forced changes and banishment to the ass end of the network schedule - Friday nights following the ratings challenged and much too soap opera Sarah Connor Chronicles. Ratings for the premier were not only bad, they were embarassing, especially for a series that received so much hype and advertising. The outlook is not good - unless ratings improve, which isn't likely on Friday nights, Dollhouse might get Fierflyed!

The super-hot Eliza Dushku on Howard Stern last week, promoting Buffy the Dollhouse. Part 1.

Re: Dollhouse

Will probably take a few episodes to "get it", given how episodic it is in nature, but Whedon builds characters. Doesn't sound good for the first episdoe though.

Wow does she have a bedroom voice when you take away the visual (not that she doesn't have a lot going for her visually)

Very interested to see how this will turn out despite whatever controversy may be going on between Whedon and Fox, plus Eliza Dushku.......yummy

Re: Dollhouse

Too bad nobody around here actually names threads after the movie or show itself - how then could a random even find the thread in a search? i actually do search for prior threads before i post - its a pet peeve that even Sith knows about these days. I've been trying to do my part in correctly naming threads after their subject matter, but I wanted Jill's attention. Im going to have to get Ramses or a mod to rename this thread - assuming mods can even do that?

Watched ep 1 last night after this thread, and I had NO expectations because id seen only one preview a long time ago. However in watching it, i was immediately stricken by the thought that Eliza Dushku was a horrible actor! There were some real deadpan, reading-from-a-script sounding moments there in the beginning, and i was hoping that it was because she was still finding her character.

other than that the premise of the show was interesting, and i'd watch it....so far, anyway. i worry though. i really do. a part of me wonders if this show will ever evolve beyond the whole "They are hurting us" with "they" being the ambiguous, scary, unknowable organization.

its very...childlike in its reasoning as a plot line. fun, i grant you - and I always enjoy this kind of show, but in an inner child kind of way. but that whole powerless protagonist being forced to do the will of the "them" to his/her own detriment is...basic. very basic.

Re: Dollhouse

So I watched the first episode online and well..... not too bad, not great, not up there with Whedon's other shows but not bad.

All in all I'd say given time to develop this could become a very interesting show, however, from what I've seen, I don't think it will be given the time it needs. It reminds me a little of Dark Angel, which I enjoyed in places, but look what happened to that. Also (and this isn't just my bias talking) I had the feeling the character of echo was probably written more for Summer Glau as opposed to Eliza Dushku, don't het me wrong, I like her. I think she's decent and gorgeous but it just had more of a Summer Glau feel to it.

We'll see...........

Re: Dollhouse

For the synopsis I got Dark Angel, but in reality it's far more like a convoluted Alias. Glau couldn't carry the lead (not saying Dushku will be able to), but would have figured her for Sierra.

Dushku is quite crap. Which sucks, because you want to love her to bits, it's just acting seriously tends to escape her. She does progress after time though. AND FRED FRED FRED (slightly battered) FRED ooooooh hello Helo (bad hair style, but hi Mr Helo all the same).

However as far as a first episode of a Whedon show goes....Buffy first 4 episodes????

Me I'm just waiting to meet Tango.

Re: Dollhouse

about to watch ep 2 right now, and before i did, i was watching the online short clips with Dushku and Glau where they do their sexy 'mercial for FOX. Im so irritated that Glau is apologizing on screen to Dusku like a sweet little girl, while Dushku just kinda of attempts to exude sex appeal.

...more like porn appeal, if you ask me. Yep that its. Dushku, to me will soon be a porn star, and Glau is the like the uberhot, scary, yet still with a veneer of sexual mystery. I dont think there's any mystery to Dushku's sex at this point.

Therein lies the problem. I think i might have even seen her tampon string when she was dancing with that guy in her nightie in Ep 1. I mean .... seriously?? Hooker dress. Really. I wish Eliza wouldnt sell herself so short, but ....

but......

am I the only one that noticed that SHE'S THE PRODUCER of Dollhouse?

I really like Sierra's character - very nice so far. Bravely on to ep2!

and yes jill. I am talking some serious smack about your girl!

It's weird that I haven't mentioned this up until now, but she and I dated for a while. (Eliza, or Lizard-Face, as I call her, or sometimes Lizzy-the-Lezzy, briefly Here-Lies'a Douche-Cute.)

I had to let her go because she didn't like it that I wore really cool little black vests all the time. Plus this happened.

Re: Dollhouse

ok, i take it back. all of it. im more intrigued the more i watch, and Im beginning to wonder if eliza actually grows into a greater comfortability of her roles. it also helps that shes surrounded by talent.

can i say:

1. O.M.G. I feel so sorry for Victor!!! AAAAAAH!!! not even a mental child should be watched having trouble in the shower. the shame!

2. has anyone figured out Alpha's agenda yet? i do not get it anything other than the obvious point that he hates the Dollhouse and have some purpose for Echo. Is he the one sending the FBI Agent the info on Echo. The reason Im vacillating on this point is because the Alpha character by his actions (the memory wipe mid-job, the hunting setup where he kills the guy in the van) doesnt seem to be on the very of a nervous breakdown - yet the guy sitting naked in from of the tv....well....sorta DOES. Any thoughts?

3. What is Sierra's deal? lovely girl, but i like it better when she gets some action. Clearly they are headed for some dawning realization and concerted effort on the part of the three Sierra, Victor and Echo, but when? WHEN?? Im so impatient already.

4. Do any of you have ANY idea how exactly Victor in his "russian" persona is really supposed to be throwing the FBI Agent off the scent? The writing is a litle to sketchy on this point, and its barely believable.

Re: Dollhouse

Okay up to the bit where the obvious doll was revealed aaaaaaaaaaaand kinda irked. I should care more than what I do (about this particular plot) the idea is great, but the execution...failing. She could die tomorrow and I wouldn't give a crap, which is, in itself, crap. The series itself is not as bad as this particular plot point, yet still feel like it should be hitting higher than it is.

It's shame when the (read: only) stand out character is one of the support cast (the tech who programs the dolls).

Re: Dollhouse

I saw a little of this show the other day... saw a fight sequence. Is anyone else distracted by how much of Douchekoo's stunts are done by a double? I figure she was really only in them so far as her face was required for reaction shots, pinned to something, or flashing a defiant victory-look.
