Arrow Did Lt. Hatcher know all along?

At the end of the story, detective Thorn tells Lt. Hatcher the terrible truth about the origin of Soylent Green.

But from Hatcher's reaction, I suggest that he really knew the truth all along.

Maybe a lot of people did.

Maybe Thorn was one of a few naive fools who had no suspicions. Maybe most people really suspected it but kept quiet and didn't want to think about it. They figured what was going on was necessary anyway.

Maybe it was best for Thorn to be taken away and silenced. For the public good. No point in raising a fuss and getting people all upset. Leave well enough alone.

Lt. Hatcher probably didn't believe him. after all Thorn was shot and dieing, Hatcher probably thought he was saying crazy things before he died.

Re: Did Lt. Hatcher know all along?

If you watched the movie, the facts are the ocean life was dying out, that is why the report was so important to the movie. How could they be introducing a new soylent, if the plankton it was supposedly based upon were dying out

No problem even if Hatcher doesn't believe him. An investigation will soon show SG is people.

moot point

I don't think the LT did know ahead of time because then he would have been able to convice Thorn (in the side) to quick inspecting. He (the LT) just knew that he'd been ordered to tell Thorn to quick looking - no explaination - from their brief exchanges it was clear that he was use to giving leeway to Thorn and letting him get the job done. In fact, it's possible that he did 'quit investigating' when he was on crowd control. The assisination attempt rekindled his interest and off he went.

In my opinion, the LT's reaction shows a man who's just learned a terrible secret, but that it's just one of many secrets he's forced to keep hidden. PLUS, it could reflect some fear as in 'knowledge of the secret' could lead to his demise.

Just my two cents

Re: moot point

The Leuitenant has gotten pretty used to life in an amazingly awful time. The very first scenes show that in Soylent Green's future is no longer a crime, but a way of life. He didn't know the secret ingredient of the world's most nessecary thing at the film's begining, but upon learning it, he simply saw it as another part of a completely corrupted world. And they did own him. He said it himself: once they wrote his paycheck, they owed him
