Pilot's Mess [chit-chat zone]

This is the forum to get to know your fellow pilots and the ONLY place to talk about everything else not really relevant to sci-fi movies, including your personal loves and interests. A true pilot doesn't discuss these issues while on duty.

The WORST Thing About Horror Films Today?

(inspired - or stolen, depending on your views - by a poll from Joblo.com...)

I am actually quite optimistic about some current horror trends. Take the movement away from gore-oriented kiddie thrillers in favor of the Japanese-style psychological horror. Granted, several of the films in question are just remakes of Japanese horror films.

Speaking of which, The Ring is a shining example of a film that didn't have to be remade, but was remade anyway- by the bloody Yanks no less- and having been done so well that the remake actually justified itself on its own terms.

"The Haunting" remake.

Any objections? No?

Next question.

I agree , I like The Ring more then Ringu. Still, they are both good films.

But I wanted to ask what is it with Japanese horror and dead black haired girls? Ringu, Grudge, Visible Secret ...

Is this the biggest horror symbol of their society?

But what amazes me even more is that even thou they keep on using this motive it manages to keep on being scary. At least to some degree.

For example The grudge did have some spooky bits, and effects, even after I've seen Ringu 1 and 2 and The Ring remake.

The ideas are not original but still scary, like the office building corridor security camera video.

Ever seen Audition? Very creepy Japanese movie. Go see it.

Why isn't there a "all of the above" choice? Can't pick just one on this poll.

There's this sucky movie with Robert deNiro and some kid... which, everytime I see the trailer, makes me feel like it's digging the horror movies' grave. Ech.
Perhaps it's a dying genre. Like musicals vanished after 1960 and the westerns died out after 1975. Perhaps we don't need horror anymore. It's like... the whole real world is scaring us enough in daily life...
Damnit, I've gotten myself all poetic again...

Every time I see the trailer, I can't help but think that it's completely ruined the ending of the movie.

*SPOILER*

The "Come out where ever you are," thing, said by DeNiro in a creepy voice. When he said it, I, and several others, thought it was a twist ending where it turned out that he was the killer. Turned out that we were correct - apparently, he has a split personality thing. Now, that's original - Fight Club, Identity...
