Sequel News?

Too good to be true? Maybe not.

Scott keen for Blade Runner sequel
Date : July 31, 2007</B> Posted By : Clint Morris

It’s been said before, so don’t go packaging up that dusty old fan-fic just yet (if even for Harrison Ford’s sake – whose likely to be about as keen to do the sequel as a cat is to have a spa), but according to “Blade Runner” director Ridley Scott, he'd like to do a sequel to his 1982 classic.
"If you have any scripts, you know where to send them," Scott said this past weekend at Comic Con where he unveiled the new DVD cut of the Harrison Ford starring sci-fi pic.
Scott's plea was legitimate. He is indeed keen to see a script for a sequel and "if it works for him, he'll try and get it made", an insider told us today.
Will it happen?
Slim chance but that doesn’t mean Scott’s interest isn’t genuine - when he said he'd be keen to see a sequel script, he meant it. He wouldn't bother otherwise.
Several years back, in an interview with Newsweek, Scott said he’d "really like to do [a sequel], I think 'Blade Runner' made some very interesting suggestions to the origins of Harrison Ford's character, addressing the idea of immortality. I think it would be a very intelligent sequel."
Indeed. But I doubt Harrison’s going to be jumping at the bit to do it (didn't they get Harrison's kid to fill-in for him on some of the touch-up scenes on the DVD? Maybe he can fill in?).
Interesting that Scott’s on the lookout for a script, too – there was reportedly quite a good script for a sequel called “Blade Runner Down”, based on K. W. Jeter's first Blade Runner sequel novel, floating around there for a while. Mustn't of been that good.
If it doesn’t come off, there’s always that unofficial sequel “Soldier” – with Kurt Russell and Jason Scott Lee – right? Er, yeah.

Yikes.

Fortunately, I can't see it happening.

Re: Sequel News?

No, no no no!!

Even with Scott at the helm and a script becomes available it will probably end up as an all-action no brainer with too much emphasis on cgi (to keep the teen demogs happy) and not enough intelligent story (what the purists want).

Much as I love Scott I reckon the studio will force him to compromise story for action. And if Scott kicks up a fuss he might get booted and replaced by a pleb like Mike Bray

Re: Sequel News?

It would also make the ending of the first film less ambigious.

Re: Sequel News?

Today, I heard on the radio that it was reported that Scott said something like: "If there's going to be a sequel, I'm not going to do it". I'm too lazy to search the web confirmation..

Re: Sequel News?

I'm hearing a lot of Blade Runner buzz lately. Nothing solid, just seeing the film mentioned a good bit, like in the EW poll posted in the Pilot's Mess. It could be buzz ahead of the big DVD release this fall. For years this film has been all but ignored excpet among the core of SF fans. Now it seems even casual scifi fans are noticing it. Interesting.

As for a sequel - I wouldn't mind seeing more films set in the BR universe and frankly I don't feel like Harrison Ford is essential to the character of Deckerd. I have no problem with some actor picking up the torch in a sequel of some kind.

Re: Sequel News?

The Blade Runner ending (Director's Cut) is so great, I'd rather see a prequel than a sequel. It could focus on the 4 replicants and what happened to them before they escaped.
