Casino Royale Reaction Thread

I found it to be a very interesting restart to the series since we see how a less suave Bond becomes a 00 agent but is still learning to put experience and cunningness before ego. I liked the ending because it probably also explains why Bond will treat women as disposable in the future. Craig was good but hard to identify with at first. The romance scenes were also a little flat. But overall, I liked it and it's got me interested in this series all over again. It doesn't make much sense how Bond's hair colour is different or how M is a female, only to become male later, and then the same female again...so I suppose it's like the Nolan/Bale Batman movies, where they completely ignore the others. I hope they're not going to be remaking/re-adaptating the other books though, because that would be weirder.

7/10

Re: Casino Royale Reaction Thread

I posted my first reaction in the Last Movie You Watched forum. I liked the movie as an action movie and certainly apprecaited the less frantic camera work that's so common in action movies these days.

As a Bond film, even a so-called prequel, I don't think I cared for it that much. Bond was much more that just machismo, testosterone, and blunt force. I think the point was that he wasn't realistic but instead a manifestation of every guy's dream - to be cool, handsome, rich, and deadly. Craig's Bond is deadly but little else. Been a Bond fan for nearly 15 years and I don't think I ever imagined James Bond as an emotionally vulnerable hot head, even when he was a rookie agent.

Again, I really wish they would have had some guts and made this a true prequel to the Bond series and made this a period film, set in the swanky and uber-cool cold-war 1950's. Casino Royale is, in reality, no prequel at all but a first installment in a whole new franchise, one that I suspect won't have anywhere close to the durability and longevity of the first 21 films.

True, but I think that remaking the franchise has been something they've been doing for years. We've always watched M and Q get older and be replaced, while Bond suspiciously stayed the same age. The Bond movies are weird because they're not really sequels or prequels, but rather multiple franchises all set in different universes. From Russia With Love feels like a sequel since it references Dr. No, and SPECTRE kept appearing in other Connery movies too. But when Roger Moore came along, the style completely changed and it does seem like it's own seperate franchise (notice how Jaws appeared in two Moore movies, yet no where else, while SPECTRE and other past baddies never made another appearance outside the Connery universe).

It was actually Moore's Bond who finally killed that cat-stroking SPECTRE mastermind Blofeld in the prologue to For Your Eyes Only, or so we think he killed him (dropped him down a smokestack as I recall), but you never know.

The Bond series was very tongue and cheek, even in the Connery days and I always loved the way you were just expected to accept the fact that Bond never seems to age while M, Q, and Moneypenny do. I think it speaks to the fact that just as we never see Bond age past his prime (unless you account the rogue-film Never Say Never Again) we never saw Bond before his prime and one could almost imagine that, yes, James Bond was forever at the top of his game. Somehow, seeing him so young, foolish, and vulnerable just takes away from the film character.

Call me a purist or maybe old fashioned and yes, I will agree that the previous Bond outing warranted some kind change in the series, but as you have mentioned, Bond has been rebooted before. Look at For Your Eyes Only - a nearly gadget free action packed spectacle with limited sexual innuendos and double entendres and a very realistic plot. Consider that it followed perhaps the most outrageous of all Bond films Moonraker. Again, look at what was intended to be Connery's final outting You Only Live Twice a somewhat tired rehash of old material with more gadgets and dazzle tossed in to make up for an actor (Connery) whose heart was clearly no longer in the series and then consider the next film Her Majesty's Secret Service, a highly serious, very action oriented film, a decent attempt at a first series "reboot." Of course fans rejected Lazenby and Connery was dragged out of the proverbial mothballs for one more round, the forgettable Diamonds Are Forever. And yet, despite all these reboots, Bond remained essentially the same - smooth, sophisticated, tough, smart, and deadly.

It seems like the first outtings for every new Bond are always very serious films, limited humor, limited gadgets, limited over-the-top moments, but eventually, perhaps inevitabely, the series always drifts back toward the outrageous and before you know it you've got invisible cars!

Funny, I don't think I've seen For Your Eyes Only. Or maybe I have...I always found a lot of the post-Spy Who Loved Me stuff to be forgetable and I could never remember which one was which. They all seemed to merge together after that.

I own every video tape but there's a couple I never got round to watching. Not seen The Living Daylights either.

I would argue (and probably convince very few Connery purists), that For Your Eyes Only is the best Bond film. It certainly ranks in the top five, along with From Russia With Love and Goldfinger.
