The Thing is Body Horror?

That's awesome! i think it's a fascinating genre which discusses about the destruction of the human body much like David Cronenberg's movies.

Do the Saw and Hostel movies or even Takashi Miike's movies count as "Body horror"?

Re: The Thing is Body Horror?

The "Saw" and "Hostel" franchises are basically torture porn. While that most certainly qualifies as a sort of "body horror," it is in my opinion the least imaginative and least interesting form of it. You can get basically the same effect from running unedited footage taken on the kill floor of a slaughterhouse. Verdict: weaksauce.

Great body horror goes beyond the banal repetition of graphic variations on the theme of unadorned sociopathy- it gets into the realm of the mind-blowingly weird and existentially terrifying. "Videodrome" is a wonderful example of this.

The sad thing is that the first "Saw" movie didn't start like that (Hostel always was torture porn). It just went downhill when they decided the traps and their outcome were more interesting than the characters.

Well Saw happens to be this generation's a Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday The 13th when it comes to horror franchises.

And do you think The Thing is as raw, tough and go for the jugular as Hostel?

Re: The Thing is Body Horror?

Is Casablanca as hard-boiled, gritty and visually innovative as Frank Miller's The Spirit?
Is Reservoir Dogs as much of an engaging, multifaceted and tragic crime/love story as Gigli?
Is a delicious slice of freshly baked pound cake as welcome at your table during teatime as the customary big sloppy pile of poop?
