I agree that the parents didn't take proper care of their son (beyond the material things, at least). I was just confused because the boy is left all alone at the end. Knocking off his parents is fine, but not even Sean Connery's (sp?) character is taking care of him.

Well, that would have been too "Hollywoodian". Besides, the movie is full of things that can happen in the boy's mind, not in reality - although they may seem to be "real".

I definitely had the sense that the boy learned to rely on himself to live, whereas at the begining, his parents, if I remember correctly, were watching television commercials and were envious of the materialistic things that they don't have.

After what the boy had been through, I don't see how he could return to their lifestyle and guardianship.
