Wink Soylent Green

Thank god for Charlton Heston - were it not for actors like him in the late 60's and early 70's, I don't think that films like Soylent Green and Planet Of The Apes would have ever been made or been so successful.

You're right--there wasn't many "big name" actors willing to take a chance. Spys and espionage were the films to attract to the money and the actors at that time.

I have to offer kind of a flip side to that. Heston's paper-entity of a production company bought "Make Room, Make Room" from author Harry Harrison for a percentage of its own profits, then, after inserting the high-concept canibalism for which it is famous, sold it to MGM for a pittance, on the understanding that MGM would give Heston a nice fat paycheck for the rights. In the process, they did kind'a cheat the author out of his rightful royalties, and, at least in that same author's opinion, destroyed the original drama and inserted some rather cliche concepts, such as the suicide parlor, and--again--the terrifying secret of Soylent Green.
