Pilot's Mess [chit-chat zone]

This is the forum to get to know your fellow pilots and the ONLY place to talk about everything else not really relevant to sci-fi movies, including your personal loves and interests. A true pilot doesn't discuss these issues while on duty.

Swear words

Why are some words considered dirtier than others? Pesonally, I don't see the distinction between crap & shit, sex & fuck, jerk & asshole, vagina & pussy, or whatever the hell else is considered swearing. My local WB network goes so far as to censor anything with "God" in it, and doesn't even allow the word "butt".

Sarcasm requires intelligence - even just a small amount.

Does that answer your question?

I can't understand why on some sites, TITTIES, is considered a swear word. They got it blocked out with asterisks like Ti**ies.

Re: Swear words

We're studying swear words in English at the moment, and it is true that getting offended by a swear word is kind of strange. Although, it does depend on the context of the situation.

It's theorized that the more intelligent you are, the less you are offended by swear words as you know they're only words, and less intelligent people are just plain offended.

I've grown more accustomed to swearing over the years, and am now abso****inlutely at home with it. There are still a couple of words, though, that I'm not too comfortable with.

Trivia : I bet she didn't

My favourite english dictionary:

"Slang and Euphemism. A dictionary of oaths, Curses, Insults, Ethnic Slurs, Sexual Slang and Metaphor, Drug Talk, College Lingo and Related Matters" by Richard A. Spears, Associate Professor of Linguistics, Nothwestern University. Signe Books, 2nd revised ed. 1991

14.500 entries and 32.000 definitions from "Aaron's Rod" to "Zulued"

This book is so great..
