Most things are, you'll always find trends/fashions and period characteristics. It's actually kinda trite to look back at some of the earlier stuff like this. First reaction is to automaticaly dismiss it as bad/cheese, but tastes have just changed that's all. God knows what the currect slate will look like in another generation's time.

I think I must have been asleep or out down the pub when this film was released: didn't even know a sequel had even been made!! Obviously jumping on the "SF is now fashionable" bandwagon the after Star Wars, CEOTTK, Superman and Star Trek movies.
