Pan's Labyrinth.

Best fantasy of last year! Any thoughts on this?

Yes : I agree

Although, wait. Was The Prestige out in the same year?

Hmm ... tough one ...

No, Pan's Labyrinth wins, if only because it's more blatantly fantasy than the other one

I actually really want to say it's over rated - simply because everyone raves about it so much, when the truth is we've just been missing a decent dark fantasy for a looooooooong time. Really good, grown up, fable.

Better than The Prestige though (well to me), by far.

i think i like Prestige more also , both are good movies but somehow I though Pan's labirynth was a bit predictable. Also it went for the corny emotional angle a bit to much.

Prime loves this film, I'll say it's good, but it ended so depressingly.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth.

I loved this film. And not just because of my obligatory Spanish Civil War obsession. For one thing, it depicted extreme violence without cheapening human life. Except for the one necessary and extremely satisfying instance, I could feel every blow and every bullet as if it were hitting me.

It was a dark fairytale with a moral and historical context. And it looked marvelous. It was not without its flaws- a certain glaring plothole/ unrealistic act of idiocy comes to mind- but it was a marvelous piece of work.

How else could a story about the Spanish Civil War end?

Do you think this is better then Henson's "Labyrinth"? for me, HELL YES! without being overly sweet or fruity like that one. This had the personality of such dark fantasy movies like "Dark Crystal" or "Return to Oz" or something from Burton.

Re: Pan's Labyrinth.

The two are completely different. Both are good and cannot really be compared to each other- names aside.
