The Original or Remake?

I am watching the original right now on Turner Classic Movies.

And yes it was made in 1951 but the effects were horrible even for then.

But The Thing looked nothing like it did in the original when they made the remake.

So this leads me to my question? What was better, the original or the remake?

Re: The Original or Remake?

I think original and remake are to be regarded as two different films with common basic elements. It is more a version of the original rather than an actual remake. And above all, it is JOHN CARPENTER'S The Thing, meaning there's gore and violence, a cool soundtrack and Kurt Russell in it...

Both are great, but I gotta go with John Carpenters version. It's one of my all time favorites.

Re: The Original or Remake?

I would definitely say the Remake.

More modern.

Better acting.

Better script.

Better movie.

Period.

Re: The Original or Remake?

Well, it is after all, a plant-based lifeform but I don't recall how it was called. Maybe "carrot" was a joke in the film or something.

i don't see what was wrong with the original. It had an alien frozen in a block of ice, accidentally thawed and then killing off the crew of the science(?) station. Set in Antarctica it was them or the creature. I enjoyed the filme. Of course, Carpenter's Thing took that story to a new level but still the original is worth watching.

Yeah, old sci-fi films are good for a laugh, and thats it. I think Films only started getting really good around the 60's.

Re: The Original or Remake?

Yes Sci-Fi started getting good in the mid to late 60's. In particularly when 2001 came out. It revolutionized EVERYTHING. It made everything look like crap and nothing the least bit good.

Actually the "Thing" in the original looked like this.....

7 foot tall.
Big Head
Fangs

Thats about it. Considering it was about 1950 or 1951 it was made it was probably cutting edge effects. But now it is kid stuff.

liked the original ending: "keep watching the stars" or something like that. it was freaky.

Re: The Original or Remake?

As I mentioned earlier (a lot earlier), I've not seen the original film, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't beat Carpenter's version. God I love this film...dark, terrifying, creepy. John's film's were really good back in the day. I don't know what happened.

Re: The Original or Remake?

if i could vote i would have gone for Carpenter.

Ive seen both films more or less back to back. And taking into consideration the level of sfx & budget etc, I still preferred the latter over the former.
