Thumbs down Re: Pretentious Crap

For $4 for the low-res version, $6 for high-res, you can sit through 35 minutes or up to 170MB worth of pretentious crap.

John Cleese (no career reference required) and Steven Dorn (Blade, ???) are the only two commonly recognizable names in this made-for-Net waste of bandwidth, but were just enough to make me stop and give it a chance.

Know how when a movie is "made for TV", you instinctively look for something else? Re-runs even? This apparent ground-breaking featurette promises to set a precendent for attaching a very low level of expectation to future "made for Net" releases.

I've been had. I'll admit it. I jeopardize any certainty in my integrity to admit that I thought "six dollars? What the hell, it could be the start of something big" and -- as the producers behind this stunt calculated on -- happily plugged in a credit-card number for the "privilege" of watching it.

To feel I have earned BACK my money in some intangible way, I'll pay penance by issuing this as a public service announcement:

Don't bother. Its not worth the money, nor even the download time were it free.

You can see a matinee or rent a movie for less and not be led on and insulted by a shallow and barely pedestrian skimming of a few ideas of quantum physics, TCP/IP jargon (delivered by John Cleese), philosophy, and theology all hastily wrapped up in and cheapened by a story that basically depicts some guy who, through a highly improbable but unremarkable chain of events (ooo! Three identical red volkswagen Beetles crash in a tunnel by chance! Deep!) and a lot of psychotic hallucinations, gets back together with his girlfriend.

This "movie" made its shameful debut Friday, May 5 at 12:01am EDT via its official web-site: http://www.quantumprojectthemovie.com

Obviously the idea behind this farce is that if you package it for the Net, people will buy it just for the novelty.

When this purchase gets converted to Canadian dollars on my VISA, it will cost MORE than if I had gone to my local SilverCity and seen a new, full-length, REAL movie on a HUGE screen with excellent sound.

FYI: The movie is in .ASF format and employs a mechanism whereby you download the movie, and the first time you play it loads your browser to a web-site for payment, upon which a key is deposited somewhere, specific to your machine and/or your OS install, which will allow unlimited viewings on, and ONLY on, the PC for which it was purchased.

Angry Still unsatisfied

I watched it twice and was still unsatisfied. The story is messy and weighed down by its attempts at meaningfulness. It tries too hard to make connections between the laws of quantum physics and mathematics, particles and people, and just ends up being naff.
