Re: Gothika and Ghosts

Ok----maybe we should differentiate b/t

a) Ghost who want help

Stir of Echoes
The Ring
Gothika
Ghost (that 80s movie w/Patrick Swayze--he messed her life up!)

b) Ghost who are just there to cause trouble

the shining (as stated: i know there are others.)
Storm of the Century (it was more of a "thing")
It (also a "thing")

In most movies, the Ghosts who want help are destructive to the helper person. . . thats my theory anyway. Absenting the 6th sense ghost of course.

So my question---->is it that they are so driven that they cannot control themselves? they need help so bad that they will get it any way they can?

Re: Gothika and Ghosts

I think the current trend of side-effect Help Me ghosts are a backlash. The early nineties/ late eighties were the age of the touchy feely ghost, somebody who just wanted help, who was us, but dead. Theres a sort of a backlash now from filmakers trying to subvert that and surprise the audience (Used to terrific effect in The Ring...)

Please God, let her be talking of the original and not the crappy "let's roll a trilogy into one film" U.S. remake...

Re: Gothika and Ghosts

The japanese Ring is a trilogy. Ring, Ring 2, Ring 0.

The american "remake ( ) is the trilogy all crammed into a single film.

As would be expected, it's complete and total **** compared to the originals.

Re: Gothika and Ghosts

SPOILERS!:

The main differences between Samara and her Japanese counterpart, Sadako, have been discussed in detail here. Ringu has slightly more scifi-ish leanings sometimes...

ok--he was altruistic, no doubt, but think of it from her perspective---she meets him (in ghost form) and people begin hunting her down---bashing her stuff up, trying to kill her. But you make a solid point: he, himself was not attempting to hurt her. But he definitely banged her house up when she wuoldnt help him---he basically made her!
