I first saw Dark City a while after I had seen The Matrix. I remember liking it when I first saw it. Then the Matrix sequels came out, and I forgot all about this movie. That is, until I saw it again a couple of nights ago. When I saw it again, I was surprised that I had forgotten how good, how brilliant this movie is.
The story is brilliant. Dark City is an intelligent movie that relies more on story than guns, explosions, and special effects. It is great to be able to watch a movie and enjoy it because of the story, not just because it has good special effects and action. Although Dark City has action and good, correction, amazing special effects, it is the story that kept me interested throughout. (Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy mindless action movies, as long as they are interesting.) Besides, it has Jennifer Connelly in it. Unfortunately, this movie is mostly unknown to the mainstream audience, which is a real shame. 12/10 EDIT: I decided to change my rating of this movie from 10 out of 10 to 12 out of 10, just because it has Jennifer Connelly in it. Yes it is great, it is a shame many people haven't seen it. "Are we what we are because of what we remember" thread captures the main intelectual issues about it. Again similiar to Matrix it deals with choice and free will, but with a diferent perspective and aproach. Still both movies in my opinion suport the idea of determinism. One of my favorite movies. |

I so agree on the Jennifer Connelly comment. She is just the quintessential weird, yet cool woman. I just like her from all the 80's/90's movies, especially Labyrinth. And Dark City was just GOOD. I didnt watch it at first bc I thought it would be too weird for me, but my sister said it was good, and she was RIGHT. Excellent film. |

Re: Excellent Movie
Did anyone else think of dark city when they watched the fight between neo and smith in revolutions?
The problem with dark city is that it was pre matrix and people are more prone to watch a film thats laiden with A list actors. At the end of the day its all down to marketing and dark city didnt have much on offer advertising wise, i dont remember seeing it plastered on every double decker bus i saw in the street, shame because it is such a good movie and i love the music for it... |

Re: Excellent Movie
But the lead actor (forgot his name) is very good, and I thought he did a great job. He gets out a lot more now, but I think that was one of his earlier movies. . .
