Started reading it yesterday. What a coincidence. See the film version, with Rutger Hauer as Max. Really good flick. Anyway, last book I read was "Fortunes of War", by Stephen Coonts, dealing with a hypothetical war between an economically devastated Russia and a ritualistic Japan led by a warrior sect. It follows especially an american volunteer squadron that goes to fly for the Russians, much like the Flying Tigers did for China in WWII. Good book. Great aerial action. ![]() |

Re: Book Tab
Last book I read - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson. It's undescribable, really - read it and decide for yourself if you like it or not, but not everyone will like it. It's a bit ... esoteric at times

Re: Book Tab
Last book was the Pocket Book of Horror Film. Good, but FFS, not every single damn horror film is about feminism or its opposite.... Previous to that, I re-read House of Leaves, which is so utterly disconcerting I find myself checking rooms just to make sure they're all exactly as I left them. Recommend it for all Silent Hill or Lovecraft fans...

As a sometime Lovecraft fan, Jill ... who's that book by? ![]() I'm currently nearing the end of Beyond the Blue Moon by Simon R Green, which is a fantasy book about two battle-scarred cops in a dirty city (very much like Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork only without the charm) who have to go back to their homeland to solve a Royal Murder Mystery. It's got humour, action and intrigue. It's the latest in a series of books, and I haven't read a single one of the previous books but I'm not having trouble with it at all, it's very accessible. |

I have more about it here. It's by the utterly unspellable Mark Z. Danielewski... there's a very hardcore group of fans on the internet, who all interpret it as something completely different. The joy is, they could all be right. It does gradually get to you, and there's no other book in the world quite like it. For example, with no explanation, every single mention of the word "house" has a different typeface. Some pages are blank, or out of order, or backwards, or in German.... It does weigh about as much as a small child though, so if you do pick it up, make sure your feet are spread and you're lifting with your legs rather than your back... More here... http://www.geocities.com/run_rom_run/houseofleaves.html Last edited by jill_valentine : Aug 8, 2004 at 10:57 AM. |
