How ready are the world health & science organizations for the theatened avian flunami being threatened right now? Also, couldn't the conventional influenza virus mutate into a form which can't be cured right away? How ready are these folks for flunamis?

You kidding me? There's already a shortage of flu vaccines - which is the only plan they had beyond border control and quarentine.

What if the flunami happened in the Star Wars universe, could the Jedi use The Force to vaccinate people?

Re: Are world governments ready for a flunami?
Back in topic, this whole "Avian Flu" thing is blown out of all proportion.
It isn't any that much deadlier than any other strand of flu, in fact, it may be even less so, but who cares? The media has everyone in such a frenzy that sales of regular flu shots have boosted to unheard-of levels, which serves a few interests right then and there. Let us worry about the REAL diseases and in dealing with them, rather than some phantom illness that "may/could/might" be harmful. |

Re: Are world governments ready for a flunami?
More people were killed in Trampolining accidents in the last month than have died of Avian Flu. And yet... some deep morbid part of me really wants to be in a post-Apocalyptic drama. Where I have super powers and immunity and live on top of a big pile of guns and food obviously.
And I could finally watch all the DVDs I want to get... until my glasses fell off and broke. "But... that's not fair! I had time now!" Last edited by jill_valentine : Jan 5, 2006 at 02:55 PM. |

Re: Are world governments ready for a flunami?
I know... directly when I people started talking about mutated avian flu and people dying I imagined myself riding around in a cool car with a machine gun on it, in a desert wasteland full of empty chicken soup cans and with the occasional feather here and there. And bald bad guys, and mutated chicken spawn mosters with multiple heads...
The thought alone brings almost orgasmic feelings. |

Re: Are world governments ready for a flunami?
Well, the hideous gaping void where my love for my fellow humans is supposed to be would be less of an issue. Nothing forms a bond like surviving a potential extinction event, and even then you can just jump in your stripped down Post-Apocalyptimobile, or alternatively, on your piebald Post-Apocalyptihorse, and claim what used to be Leinster all for yourself. Sounds good.
Maybe I'll join one of those Doomsday cults. I hear North Australia has one, and I do want to go to Australia some day. Besides, from On The Beach to Mad Max, Australia has always been the Apocalypse capital of the world. Actually, perhaps I should learn to cook properly, before I go wiping out all the people who make Birdseye stuff. Seriously though, don't discount the idea of some form of epidemic. We're well overdue for a good plague. Besides, our Pharmeceutical industries are far too busy finding a million different ways to sell us Aspirin to produce new drugs to compensate for resistant strains. |

Re: Are world governments ready for a flunami?
We're also long overdue for a cataclysmic asteroid colision, and hey, you don't see the media ranting about it.
If it comes, it comes and we'll be ready for it, better than they'd have us believe. Don't forget what our sources are: they care about a little something called "ratings", and panic sells (boy, does it ever), especialy these days. |

Re: Are world governments ready for a flunami?
See, I hadn't even considered it a threat (Not like Trampolines, which do pose a genuine safety risk in my job) but then they had a bloke from the WHO on the radio. He was asked on to make everybody else look stupid for hyping it, and proceeded to outline all the reasons why this might be The Big One. Regular flu once set me on the road to hospital, one with a fancy name could be the end of me. Still, just can't seem to get worried.
