Isaac Hayes quits South Park...

...Citing "Bigotry" and "Intolerance"

http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2006-03-14/

Quote:
"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of checks - with our show making fun of Christians." Last November South Park satirized the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers in a top-rated episode entitled Trapped In The Closet. In the episode, a cartoon version of Scientologist Tom Cruise locks himself in a closet and refuses to come out. Stone adds that he and Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and, to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin." Parker has previously said the show had avoided the controversial topic of Scientology out of respect for Hayes and his religious beliefs. He explains, "Finally, we just had to tell Isaac, 'Dude, we totally love working with you, and this is nothing personal, it's just we're South Park, and, if we don't do this, we're belittling everything else we've ripped on.'"

On the one hand, I'm all for tolerance. Go Tolerance. On the other hand, the South Park guys are absolutely right.

Their job is merciless satire. Picking favourites for their friends would be against everything they stand for. It'd make them no better than Sean "humour lobotomy" Penn.

On "South Park"?!

Really?!

Nine Hell's, where's this world coming to..?

Ahem... "bigotry", "intolerance" and other nice things are part of what makes the show funny.

Re: Isaac Hayes quites South Park...

South Park is magnificent precisely because it manages the astonishingly feat of being pitiless without being either bigotted nor intolerant - every minority, majority and inbetweenity gets equal inconsideration, just as with Family Guy (Irish museum, anybody?). Nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with highlighting or lampooning the failings of one group provided you're equally capable of recognising them in another, and of course, you're own.

Stone and Parker don't have a propagandist agenda behind it all. All South Park has ever said is "Dude, this is stupid. Do something less stupid. Seriously.

And as for you..."

I've always said that Stone and Parker are briliant social commentators. I'm 100% behind them on this.

I never liked South Park, I just found it too irritating. Some of the episodes are funny, but I just wanted them to shut up after a while. Especially Cartman.

But... it's brilliant!

True, the last few episodes I've seen have taken some easy targets (Although, fair play that they managed to find something new to say about Michael J-... um, Jefferson.) but it remains brilliant. The Simpsons got soft, Drawn Together got gross out, everything else got cancelled. South Park remains, still pointing out how crap we all are.

Ack. I spell checked Isaac Hayes, I cannot believe I mispelled "Quits".

Aw Bless.

If anybody needs me... I'll be sorting coloured wooden blocks into the correctly shaped holes. I could be some time.

... I stepped over that one deliberately. I've heard mixed opinions on series 4...

I still like "Family Guy"

the episode where Megan attracts a lesbien freind...
and the guys from "American Movie" step out of her closet with a camera.

I about lost it!

plus they have Adam west as mayor.

I've not seen season 4, but my friend has left Family Guy 1-3 at work so every now and then I have a mini-marathon.

American Dad is amusing, but I've only seen a couple of episodes. And the main character irritates me much more than Peter Griffin could.

I'll miss chef, though

Sorry. Just don't like it. They occasionally start off well, but eventually I just want to throttle that git Cartman by the end. He gives me a headache and reminds me of certain people I will never like to meet again.

Family Guy is genuinely crap though, IMO. Just not funny at all.
