Pilot's Mess [chit-chat zone]

This is the forum to get to know your fellow pilots and the ONLY place to talk about everything else not really relevant to sci-fi movies, including your personal loves and interests. A true pilot doesn't discuss these issues while on duty.

Official Sciflicks Convention

This has been talked about before, I'm sure, and perhaps the time for organising a serious 'official' event like this has passed what with all the spam and absences around here lately, but I think it's still worth a try.

I think it's about time we had an Official Sciflicks Convention. One where at least most of us can meet up, chat, have a drink and a laugh, watch a movie or two, do whatever.

Obviously it'd be a logistical nightmare, and not everyone would be able to turn up and finances would be stretched etc etc but I think, after all these years, it's perhaos about time we took the emphasis off of isolated meetings and one-offs and tried to organise a great big come-together. SciFlicks 07, perhaps. well, realistically Sciflicks 08, more like

I declare Sciflicks Convention talks open! Er, again

I like this idea a lot, and was actually mulling the possibility over...

Obviously, I think it would have to be Engerland. Aaaaand I haven't made any holiday plans yet this year, so I'm um, flexible.

Yay for flexible people!

I was talking with Iwata a while back, and we both came to the same conclusion, that England is a good place for a convention. It's close to mainland Europe, it's close to America - and I think, currently, most of our members are from this general area, unless I'm mistaken.

So did you have a thriving urban hotspot in mind?

Details? Trouble me not with details! I am ... a visionary! We do not deal with trifling matters such as details and plans and things!

Er, in other words, no. But London's a fairly obvious choice, I guess, being quite easy to get to for most people (as opposed to Scunthorpe, or East Leake, or Royston Vasey).

And then we'd need a venue of some sorts.

Well I am for it of course. The thing is what time are we talking about? Meaning date - the summer coming or before/after that. (example). I have to check about visa and of course money (those two will be a big problem). Another thing is that I am currently hooked up in Italy until the end of May, and so that renders me unable to come if it is before the end of May.

Anyway lets see what the others will say. Would be fun to meet people from various backgrounds.

I say we meet in a secluded cottage, waaay out in the middle of a forest, at midnight on the night of a full moon, and quote star wars to get into the rickety log cabin,

I remember that thread, it was great fun. Hopefully if the discussion here bears fruit then some of the ideas there will have a chance to come to be

Somewhere in England sounds nice. Wouldn't make it though. Bit pricey.

Yeah, ingeland is a bad idea, it should be somewhere continental so us poors can hitchhike our way there.

Re: Official Sciflicks Convention

I'm up for it. I vote for a Sci-Fi movie marathon/piss-up. Can't think of any better way to spend time together. I'm not particularly arsed about the location. I haven't been out the country in 2 years, so I could do with a holiday if a suitable venue can be found. Although London is as good a place as any.
