Cole (Willis) arrives at a mental hospital, claiming to be a time traveller from the year 2035. His mission: to save humanity from a killer virus that will devastate the future world population. A psychiatrist (Stowe) initially classifies Cole as delusional, but she soon joins him. As they race to unravel the secret of the 12 Monkeys, their paths cross with a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient (Pitt) and a scientist (Christopher Plummer). Before long, Cole begins to question his own sanity.

I think the virus was a terrorist thing. It was from a group called the 12 monkeys and pitt is the leader. they want to destroy humanity or something. cole was sent to stop the virus, and he was sent to 1996 which I think was too early ( 2 yrs).

12 Monkeys is a remake of a French film, La Jettee. It's SUPPOSED to be confusing and disorienting...the basic premise is that the future is a terrible, impoverished desolation, caused by the effects of a terrorist-released airborne plague. The "past"--our present--is outwardly much more comfortable, but it oppresses the time traveller by diagnosing him as a mad criminal while it allows a truly mad criminal––the Brad Pitt character––to have the freedom and power to destroy humanity. Cool, huh?

From what I saw from the movie, the virus is not from the terrorist. It's made by Pitt's father, and spreaded by his assistance. The movie starts with that the future people think the virus is from the terriost call 12 Monkeys, but near the end of the movie, we all know that it's not, the 12 Monkeys group is actually just a group of people who what to free the animals!

the director explained in an interview that Pitt was the one carrying the virus, and the dream was real. It was how history played out when Cole was a little boy.

I wached the DVD with directors commentary and there is no such line .... anyway even if he said it it only shows ( and disapoints me) that the director is not determined what kind of "time travel phylosophy he exploits" . In my opinion this movie supports the statment that past can't be altered and that all this Past and present allready "happened" together with all time travel loops . This theory is the so called Single Line Time. We Just follow the life expirence of one caracter of The single Line Time, but beacuse he travels back in time we do it in loop backs.
No matter what the director said , the fact is he made the movie to support this type of time travel theory.

this is in response to the guys who's calling people "stupid" and "idiots." i never thought that Goines (Brad Pitt) was the one carrying the virus in one version of events. in fact, i thought there was only ONE version of events, since you "can't change the past." if Goines is the one carrying the virus in one version of history, isn't it quite amazing that he happens to wear the same clothes as Dr. Peters (the "red head")?

you don't have to call people names just to prove yourself right. in fact, i don't want to listen to you BECAUSE of that. furthermore, gilliam has also stated that he often lies about his works, because he doesn't like to be quoted. i don't think there's any right/wrong interpretation of this film (but we do have popular opinion), so i don't know where you get off calling people idiots.

and i guess i am also a stupid idiot in your opinion, because i never viewed it the way you did. i see it that he saw Goines in his dream that one time, which was after he met him, because he couldn't remember the man's real face, and Goines was convenient. this is much in the way Railly says, "It's become me now (the woman in his dreams) because of what's happening." this, we later find out is not true. plus, i don't think dreams can be called reality.

you guys dont get it. Cole, many times in the movie said you cant change the future, because if u did then it wont need Cole to travel back in time. Thus none of this traveling to past would have occured. Cole's mission was just to find a pure sample of the virus so the scientist can find a cure. therefore letting man to be on the surface of earth again.
