Cannot agree with you 4years.. An excellent film/story--which ever version people prefer. If you don't reckon the story--you have to admire the technical work and SFX

Cool Re: What were you thinking James??

I, too, must disagree with you, here.

The Abyss was a wonderful film. It stands out from other sci-fi in many ways. Not the least of which is the story. Not often can such a long movie (without action) keep you interested for its entire duration.

Also, I found the characters in this movie to be very believable and was able to associate with them, which is a definite plus in any movie.

Definitely one of my favorite sci-fi films, and is in my Top20 of all time.

Infact, I think I'll look towards getting this on DVD... and I've noticed that Amazon.com shows the Five Star Collection as "out of stock." Does this (anyone?) mean that the double-disc DVD has been discontinued? Would this single-disc version suffice?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd

It says that the single-disc contains both the theatrical (2 1/2 hours) and director's versions (3 hours) of the film. Can anyone verify this? I've never seen the director's cut, and would like to purchase a DVD which has this version, but also the original version if that is included as well.

If you've never seen the extended version then you're in for a real treat.
It explains much more of the ending and generally has a rounder, more satisfying feel to it.

The extended version is widely available.
If you're in the UK try www.play.com
If you're in the US try www.dvdboxoffice.com (Canadian site but with free delivery - to Europe, anyway, so I presume to US).

4years - why do you come up with such flame-inducing statements without ever supporting your case? Why do you think or it the way you do?

Why I really think 4years is pissed at this movie is because it's way too complicated for himself. Or his mind. Or that he never bothered to watch it all the way through and decided he didn't like it because he never got past the first part where the sub sank.

The thread should be '4years, what were you thinking hating The Abyss ?'
