Re: valid vs invalid
did anyone understand this? i was a bit confused. what determined whether a person was considered valid or invalid? was it whether or not they worked at Gattaca? or did they have to have a genetic rating of higher than a certain amount? or did it have to do with somethin else? anyone know?

Re: valid vs invalid
I believe that they most likely had a certain set of standards by which someone was determined valid or invalid. You didn't have to be perfect to be valid, because Irene (Uma) had that heart problem, and was still considered valid. However, if you had many problems, as Vincent did, then he probably would not meet those standards, and be considered invalid.

thats what i thought for a while, but then how come to gain access to gattaca, they only had to be a valid. that was the "check" at the door, so then i was thinking that perhaps valid meant you worked there, so naturally anyone who was valid would be allowed access to gattaca, but if you didnt work there, like if jerome had tried to go through, even though he had a rating of 9.3 (i believe), that he would not be allowed. that he would have been an invalid because he didnt work there, even with his superrior genetics. but i am still not sure, anyone else have any ideas?

Those who were genetically modified in the lab before being born are considered valid. They are test tube babies. Those who are concieved naturally like you and I are considered invalid. I hope this helps.

Re: valid vs invalid
I agree with Eln. The Valids where genetically engineered to specific criteria such as appearance and IQ, but the outcome was not guaranteed, hence Irene's heart condition.
Whereas Jerome was born naturally, therefore no preselection of criteria and invalid. |

Re: valid vs invalid
I agree with this point that genetically designed are Valid and Natural Invalid. But the reason why didn't Vincent get inside the building is probably both. He wasn't working there, they probable had a database of all employees, so every employe has an id in the database and his wasn't there and of course "It would be strange if an Invalid could get a job i such an Institution like Gataca" ..
