This movie was pretty great. I think it was far better than titanic and it worked much better than close encounters. The thing is that the "aliens" didn't have to be aliens. There was no evidence and they went jumping to conclusions. Maybe they were angels. The sequence that made me realize that I was watching a pretty amazing story is when lindsey told bud to let her drown and try to revive her. That was pretty great. Also, the script was pretty well written and structurally pretty sound. Dialogue, OK, but it didn't need to be great. These days we get a lot of polished dialogue and such self conscious films that we don't get experiences anywhere as epic and wonderful as The Abyss. Far better than Titanic or even T2. Very much the next step from 2001 and Close Encounters. Cameron is like the guy who sees that the t's aren't crossed and the i's aren't dotted on a story and takes something we've sorta seen and makes it nearly complete and pretty impressive.

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
Best movie? Maybe not best, I think Camerons best was T2. Then T1, then Alien. Then True Lies, then this.
Still a good movie none the less. I loved it! Enjoyed it thouroughly, just got the SE DVD a few weeks ago, this plot had depth. And I think the SE version of the movie really made the movie that much better. |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
Cameron did Aliens not Alien (I'm sure it was just a typo
)For me it's a close tie between The Abyss and Aliens, T1 & 2 don't even come close (though I love both) - True Lies was OK fun, Titantic ~shivers~ don't even get me started. |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
The Abyss is indeed one of his best movies. Far away from the pathetic and overlong Titanic and maybe more entertaining than gloomy but great Aliens.
(Interesting, but some people who don't like The Abyss usually says that it was too messy, they didn't know who is who... Does everybody start to look the same when they have to be together under water for awhile? ) |

Yes sorry about that it was a typo.
Problem fixed. Either way T2 is still his best film (Camerons best) and Titanic still his worst. |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
The Abyss and Aliens are in my top three favourite films of all time, but The Abyss pips the post at number one. I love the detail and attention to character and plot and scenery. Not relying too much on CGI but rather the good old fashioned clunky set building. And the actors are tremendous.
Ditto really for Aliens. But there's something about The Abyss that holds it's place in my heart. |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
The Abyss is a really well made film but it isn't his best. To me T2 was his best and will always be unless he does T4.
My Order(His most popular films) 1.T2 2.Aliens 3.The Terminator 4. The Abyss 5.True Lies 6.Titanic |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
It's down to personal opinion, naturelment...
I preferred T1 to T2. It's what you like out your films. SFX aren't my top priority. But T2 (the Director's cut) is excellent, I just love The Abyss more. |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
I agree, you cant really say that one film is better than another because everyone does have a personal choice.
If you say that it's the best then that's really your own personal opinion and maybe others will agree on it in one way or the other or disagree. I liked The Abyss never the less though, the script was carefully well thought out and the characters were well done, the effects are top notch and they hold up today (even in this overly done CGI era). A great film (but.....that's just my opinion and it doesn't matter to anyone else who has theirs). |

Take the diplomatic route! That's my motto. The Abyss certainly does stand the test of time. And like you said, it's down to the script and characters. I'm not sold on SFX alone. I have to relate to and love the characters in order to enjoy a film or tv programme. I think this comes from being a prolific reader from such a young age. It makes you value plot and people above the visual niceties. One film that does sell me on the good looks front is The Fifth Element. It's a very visual film, but it also has good characterization in it. And the music, another important element. The Abyss has a good score to it, which is one of the first things I notice when it comes to movies. |

Re: ABYSS IS cameron's best film
Without the silly "The aliens are going to punish us for being so mean to each other" subplot that was, if memory serves, cut out of the theatrical version, I might agree that this is his best film.
Never made a whole lot of sense that the peace loving aliens were going to punish us for killing each other by killing us. Kind of hypocritical of those little mongrels. Last edited by HighWiredSith : Sep 1, 2005 at 08:33 AM. |
