Question The changes in colour...

As we know, Minority Report is almost entirely blue/grey. But in the end it changes to orange. How did you like this change? What it meant to you or did you even noticed that?

Well from what I saw in Minority Report, the blue's, gray's, white's, etc. really accentuated Spielberg's point. And the ending, it was really a change in story. Therefore a change in color is nessacary.

Re: The changes in colour...

The color was really an extension of Tom Cruises mood. It's bright and colorful when he's swimming with his son, and goes bleak after that scene. He has hope at the end, and the color returns. On a certain level, it works. But when I pay to see a movie, I expect it too be in color. I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't like this. "Payback" used a similar bleaching, but I think it worked better in that movie, it made it grittier.

Well the mood theory is a good one. In fact it is right. But I have always found a tempo or in a sense a mood is set through the directors storytelling through colors/cinemetography.

Re: The changes in colour...

...They were talking about this colour thing in the documentary part on DVD, but there was no mention about changing from pale colours (blue...) to warm colours (orange...). Was that actually the same shooting method?

Eh? I didn't notice to be honest, I just remember the film being fairly dark throughout.

Will make a point to note the colours in future viewings of this film.

Speaking of the end...

Speaking of the end of the film, the last few scenes have always bothered me. I can't help but think it would have been much more powerful to end with the shot of Tom Cruise's character and his pregnant wife serenly looking out the window, rather than with the sweeping scenes of the precogs in the cabin. To me, it seems like that the window scene was the last shot, only to have the cabin scene sorta tacked on at the last moment.

Yes, it did have an "afterthought" look to it. Just mentioning what happened to them would have been enough. Though I don't think it was neccessary to say anything at all about them, we knew they were out of a job.

...They could also have shown only the pre-cogs in the end and not even mention Anderton. Although that wouldn't have been good story telling, that could have been interesting way to end it...

I think all of the scenes in the city had the bluish, dark tint, very depressing, giving everything a dirty look. It's when they got out of the city that the color changed.

Re: The changes in colour...

The colours worked. The bit with the cottage, the swimming pool, etc. had colourful colours like orange to make the place look more beautiful. In the city, where lots of stuff like murder go on, there are dark, shady colours. If they used the blueish-grey colours at the end it wouldn't look right (and make you think that the future is a bit of a dull place with all the colours the same throughout the movie).

Nexus is right.

The colors worked. They set a tempo and mood for the movie unconciosly really.

And it worked. It really gave a dull and almost depressing tone to the film.

Hey, no need to be sorry about that. You did hurt nobody with that opinion. Not even those people who don't own a widescreen tv...

Re: The changes in colour...

I essentially agree.

The countryside colors should provide a more relaxing tone. As compared to the blues and greys that provide somewhat of a tense feeling....
